The malware surfaced is named WolfRAT and its campaign was targeting users in Thailand. Researchers believe that Wolf Research operates this malware, a spyware organization in Germany. This organization also provides tools related to espionage to the government. In their analysis, the researchers said that chat details such as WhatsApp records, Messenger, and SMS can contain users’ sensitive information, and often people forget after sharing such details.

Researchers said in the report, ‘We have found that WolfRAT is targeting most popular encrypted apps in Asia and maybe overshadowed by the negligence of users. This malware can also dodge alert users using end-to-end encrypted chatting apps and create a Victim. ‘ Researchers at security company Cisco Talos believe that this malware can be installed with the help of phishing/smishing links sent to the device.

• The only way of protection

After downloading the device, WolfRAT works just like a normal app like Google Play Apps or Flash Updates. The malware installs with a package name such as com.google.services, so that the user does not suspect that the package is connected to Google. At the same time, in the back-end, this malware attacks the data of the messaging apps and the user does not even know. To avoid this, only downloading apps from the Google Play Store is one way.
